JOB DETAILS:
We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and highly qualified person to fill the position of Project Officer, Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT)):

Reporting to: Greater Virunga Landscape (GVL) Coordinator
Location: Kampala/ Kabale (IGCP Office) with frequent travel to Rwanda and Goma (DRC)

Duties
• Develop and undertake research on wildlife trade in the GVL, carry out surveys and market studies to estimate the scale and impact of wildlife trade
• Undertake training on information management to enable systematic input of data, and its analysis;
• Convene, facilitate and/or chair meetings and workshops, and consolidate relationships with project partners and collaborators;
• In collaboration with other relevant project partners, develop training programs for key stakeholder groups including PA authorities, immigration, prosecution and investigation departments in partners states;
• Work with GVTC and other project partners to develop a regional IWT task force and convene its meetings as may be required from time to time;
• Consult with government agencies and relevant organizations to identify wildlife trafficking information gaps;
• Prepare timely information and reports for dissemination to key actors in IWT in the region, and undertake follow up actions as may be needed;
• Support communication team in organizing events to raise awareness, compile reports, briefing papers and other communications on illegal wildlife trade;
• Work with project partners specifically GVTC, Protected Area Authorities and TRAFFIC on data collection and management protocols in order to effectively track IWT in the region;
• Prepare project technical reports for submission, ensuring that reports of partners are consolidated for submission to the donor;
• Support GVTC teams on the set-up and management of database on wildlife trade to monitor and report wildlife trade incidences along main trading routes and markets;
• Support other in-country teams in developing effective awareness and livelihoods programme to dismantle the supply chain of wildlife trade in the GVL;
• Any other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience
• A university Bachelor’s degree in any conservation related field. Additional post graduate qualification will be an added advantage;
• Five 3 years’ experience in designing and/or implementing conservation projects preferably with components on illegal wildlife trade/ combatting wildlife crimes, protected area management;
• Experience in doing market analyses and surveys;
• Strong research and analytical background including research in the field;
• Fluency and excellent writing skills in English; Working knowledge and proficiency in French/ Swahili will be beneficial;
• Familiarity with major trends in research methodologies, conservation policy and research, issues relevant to the trade in terrestrial wildlife between Africa, Asia and other Markets;
• Ability to communicate publicly (written and oral) and with a wide range of audiences, particularly the local communities;
• Ability to convey the work of WWF with confidence and credibility;
• Good team player with the ability to also work well under own initiatives;
• Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively;
• Familiarity of the Greater Virunga Landscape (GVL).
