About the Role
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Underwriting Manager – Life Assurance (Uganda) will lead and manage life assurance underwriting operations by ensuring sound risk selection, pricing adequacy, portfolio profitability, and compliance with underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements, while supporting sustainable growth of the life assurance business.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Underwriting Strategy & Risk Governance
- Develop and implement life underwriting policies aligned with the company’s risk appetite and actuarial assumptions
- Ensure consistent application of underwriting manuals, authority limits, and decision frameworks
- Review and approve complex life risks within delegated authority
- Monitor portfolio risk exposure and loss ratios
Life Risk Assessment & Decision Making
- Oversee underwriting of individual and group life products including term assurance, whole life, endowment, credit life, and group life
- Ensure appropriate use of medical, financial, and occupational risk assessments
- Manage substandard lives, exclusions, loadings, and special terms
Pricing, Profitability & Portfolio Management
- Collaborate with Actuarial and Finance teams to ensure pricing adequacy
- Monitor underwriting experience against assumptions
- Recommend corrective actions to improve portfolio profitability and risk quality
- Review pricing models to ensure adequacy and competitiveness
- Monitor underwriting profitability by product, segment, and channel
Reinsurance Management
- Manage facultative and treaty reinsurance arrangements for life business
- Ensure accurate risk cessions and compliance with reinsurance treaties
- Liaise with reinsurers on large sums assured and complex risks
Operations & Process Excellence
- Ensure efficient underwriting turnaround times and service standards
- Drive process improvements, automation, and digital underwriting initiatives
- Ensure proper documentation, policy issuance, and record management
- Improve renewal workflows, automation, and data quality
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Ensure compliance with Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) guidelines and internal controls
- Support internal and external audits and regulatory reviews
- Ensure adherence to AML, KYC, and data protection requirements
Stakeholder Engagement
- Provide technical underwriting support to Sales, Bancassurance, and Distribution teams
- Engage medical service providers and financial assessors
- Support product development initiatives from an underwriting perspective
Retention & Client Value Management
- Drive retention of profitable and strategic accounts while managing exit of poor-performing risks
- Partner with Sales and Brokers on renewal negotiations and retention initiatives
- Minimize policy lapses arising from underwriting delays, pricing errors, or process gaps
People Management & Capability Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop the life underwriting team
- Set performance targets and conduct performance reviews
- Identify training needs and succession plans
Who We’re Looking For
Academic & Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business Administration, Actuarial Science, Economics, or a related discipline.
- Master’s degree is an added advantage.
- Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, CII, Diploma in Insurance, or equivalent, recognized by the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda.
Experience
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in the General Insurance sector, with at least 3 years in a senior management or executive leadership role, preferably within the East African region.
- Proven track record in driving business growth, technical underwriting discipline, operational leadership, and regulatory compliance.
