Job Summary:
The NICU Nurse provides specialized nursing care to critically ill newborns requiring intensive care. The role involves monitoring the condition of newborns, administering treatments, and providing support to families during a challenging time.
Key Responsibilities:
Newborn Assessment and Monitoring:
• Receiving patients, registering admissions, discharges and deaths
• Perform thorough assessments of newborns in the NICU, including vital signs, oxygen levels, and other critical indicators.
• Regularly monitor and document changes in condition, alerting medical staff to any concerns.
• Administer medication, treatments, and interventions such as CPAP and mechanical ventilation under the guidance of the senior medical personnel.
Care and Treatment:
• Provide neonatal care, including feeding, diapering, and comforting newborns.
• Assist with resuscitation and stabilization of newborns in critical condition.
• Operate and manage NICU equipment such as incubators, ventilators, and infusion pumps.
• Family Support and Education:
• Provide emotional support and education to parents and families, explaining the care process and condition of their newborn.
• Instruct families on how to handle, feed, and care for their infant after discharge.
Documentation and Reporting:
• Accurately document all aspects of newborn care, treatments, and patient progress in medical records.
• Communicate patient status and treatment plans with the NICU team during handovers.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to plan ongoing care for each newborn.
Compliance and Safety:
• Adhere to hospital policies, infection control procedures, and neonatal care guidelines.
• Ensure proper sterilization of NICU equipment and maintain a safe environment for newborns.
• Maintain a clean and healthy environment for the patients; and
• Participate in continuing medical education and in-service training to stay updated with new NICU practices and protocols, including neonatal resuscitation and infection prevention.
Qualifications:
• Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
• Registration with the Nursing Council and a valid practicing license.
• Specialized training in neonatal intensive care is preferred.
• At least 2 years of experience working in a NICU setting.
Skills and Competencies:
• Strong knowledge of neonatal intensive care protocols.
• Ability to operate NICU equipment efficiently.
• Excellent communication skills with a compassionate and patient-centered approach.
• High level of attention to detail and problem-solving skills in critical situations.
