JOB DETAILS:
The Infectious Diseases Institute is targeting young investigators with experience in research to support starting their career as independent investigators.
We aim to train one research fellow/post doc to transition to independent investigator by identifying a training grant opportunity and being paired with an international collaborator and local mentors (senior scientists at IDI). The training program will include mentorship full time stipend, and a lumpsum for research funds or formal training (course to apply to). The expected outcome of the training is a grant proposal through IDI in areas which need to be prioritized to end the HIV epidemic by 2030 or priority areas of the IDI strategic plan
The post-doc fellow is expected during the 12-month period to work on a grant proposal that is supported by previous data that the applicant has or aims to access and analyze in the first three months of the fellowship.
Eligibility
1. Candidates with PhDs or in the final stages of completing their PhD are preferred. However candidates with a Masters level education AND a good research track record and publication for the past 3 years will be considered.
2. Candidates with evidence of having acquired competitive research funding for a career development/small grant project
3. Candidates with evidence of support of at least one mentor/supervisor with publications and acquisition of independent funding in the last 3 years in the same area of expertise of the candidate proposal
4. Candidates with evidence of access to preliminary data/samples that can support the proposed grant submission
Eligible participants will be assessed and scored based on their application package including the scientific rigor of the proposal and the qualifications of the candidate and the mentors and the potential of the proposed full proposal to be fundable.
Key Responsibilities
Key deliverable at the end of the 1-year scholarship period will be:
1. A successful research grant proposal for independent funding (e.g., K43 awards, NIH K43, R21, EDCTP fellowship, African leadership award, small career grants like Glocal not considered) submitted and funded
2. At least 1 publication in peer reviewed journals
3. Mentorship of at least 1 junior researcher (e.g. master/PhD trainee) or a junior investigator in scientific writing with at least 1 publication submitted as last author
Person Specification
Key Components of the IDI funded scholarship:
1. Salary support to ensure 100% protected time that will be monitored. This is a FULLTIME position
2. Creation of a mentoring team specifically for grant writing. In addition to the candidate and the mentor proposed by the candidate the IDI will provide an additional IDI based mentor and will connect the candidate with potential international collaborators
3. A lumpsum for research funds or formal training (course to apply to)
4. Research office support (includes regulatory, REC submission support etc.)
5. Pairing with a specific grants manager to understand requirements for the proposed grant submission and development of a budget
