Background

King Ceasor University (KCU) is a chartered private university located in Bunga, Kampala, committed to academic excellence, innovation, research, and quality assurance in higher education. The University is seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced applicants for the position of Associate Professor -- Law. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in legal education, teaching, research, postgraduate supervision, curriculum development, academic leadership, scholarly publication, innovation, and community engagement.

Role

The Associate Professor -- Law shall report to the Dean/Head of Department/Deputy Vice Chancellor and shall:

• Provide academic and research leadership in teaching, legal scholarship and community engagement within the Department of Law.
• Deliver and lead high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate legal education through lectures, seminars, moot court exercises and clinical legal instruction.
• Advance excellence in research, scholarly publication, innovation and postgraduate supervision, including at Master's and PhD level.
• Mentor and develop junior academic staff while leading curriculum development and quality assurance initiatives.
• Provide senior academic leadership in departmental, Faculty and University governance, including service on committees, boards and working groups.
• Perform such other duties as may be delegated by the Head of Department, Dean, Deputy Vice Chancellor or University Management.

Purpose of the Job

To advance excellence in legal education through sustained, high-quality teaching, research leadership and innovation; strengthen postgraduate legal education and supervision, including at PhD level; enhance the University's research productivity, scholarly publication and grant income; and provide academic leadership that supports the achievement of the University's strategic objectives in teaching, research and service.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare and deliver high-quality lectures, seminars and practical sessions for undergraduate and postgraduate law students.
• Lead the design, review and continuous improvement of course content to ensure alignment with contemporary legal developments, accreditation requirements and industry practice.
• Lead moot court exercises, legal clinics and practical legal training in collaboration with courts, chambers and relevant institutions.
• Oversee the development, administration and moderation of examinations, coursework and other student assessment methods in accordance with University policies.
• Supervise postgraduate research, including LLM dissertations and, where applicable, PhD research in law.
• Lead high-quality legal, socio-legal and interdisciplinary research addressing national, regional and global legal and policy priorities.
• Publish research findings in reputable peer-reviewed law journals and author or edit scholarly books, book chapters and conference proceedings.
• Lead multidisciplinary research projects, consultancies and collaborative research initiatives.
• Mentor junior and mid-career academic staff and postgraduate students in teaching, research, publication, grant writing and professional development.
• Lead curriculum development, programme review, accreditation and quality assurance activities within the Department and Faculty.
• Champion the integration of digital technologies, case-based learning and innovative teaching approaches into legal education.
• Identify funding opportunities, lead the preparation of competitive research grant proposals and secure external research funding.
• Build and strengthen collaborative partnerships with courts, law firms, government agencies, professional bodies, development partners and international universities.
• Serve on departmental, Faculty and University committees and contribute to academic planning and policy implementation.
• Provide specialist legal expertise through consultancy, public lectures, legal aid initiatives and continuing legal education programmes.
• Lead community legal outreach programmes, access-to-justice initiatives and public legal education activities organised by the University.
• Uphold and promote the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and academic integrity.
• Prepare periodic academic, research and administrative reports as required.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the University Management.

Candidate Specification

Applicants must:

• Hold an earned PhD or equivalent academic doctorate in Law or a relevant legal discipline from a recognised university.
• Demonstrate sustained excellence in university teaching, legal research, postgraduate supervision and academic leadership.
• Possess a strong and sustained record of scholarly publication, curriculum development and academic leadership.

Academic Qualifications and Experience

• An earned PhD or equivalent academic doctorate in Law or a relevant legal discipline from a recognised university.
• A Bachelor of Laws (LLB Honours) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice or equivalent professional legal training from a recognised institution.
• Enrolment as an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda or an equivalent recognised professional legal body will be an added advantage.
• A minimum of five (5) years of progressive university teaching, research and academic leadership experience, including at least three (3) years at the rank of Senior Lecturer or equivalent in a recognised higher education institution.
• Demonstrated and sustained excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate legal teaching.
• A demonstrated record of at least five ( 5) peer-reviewed publications, or an equivalent combination of journal articles, book chapters and authored/edited books, in reputable, indexed outlets.
• Successfully supervised at least two (2) postgraduate students to completion, including at LLM level, with evidence of PhD co-supervision an added advantage.

Tenure

The Associate Professor -- Law shall hold office in accordance with the University's terms and conditions of service and subject to satisfactory performance.
