Job description
A Data Center Engineer is responsible for designing, maintaining, and monitoring the critical physical and network infrastructure of a facility to ensure maximum uptime. This role bridges the gap between hardware technology and industrial facility management, ensuring seamless operations in a 24/7 environment.
Education & Experience
- Formal Degree: Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field.
- Work History: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in data centers or heavy industrial infrastructure environments.
Technical Skills
- Power Systems: Expertise in generators, UPS, inverters, rectifiers, transformers, substations, and large-scale industrial power equipment.
- Power Distribution: Monitoring PDUs, switchgears, and VFDs to balance electrical loads.
- Cooling & Environmental Controls: Managing HVAC systems, CRAC units, and air handlers to maintain precise temperature and humidity thresholds.
- IT & Networking: Troubleshooting server hardware (CPUs, memory, drives), deploying fiber-optic and copper cabling, and using infrastructure monitoring tools.
Certifications & Compliance
- Core Certifications: AutoCAD, Microsoft Vision, and preferably Data Center-specific certifications.
- Industry Standards: Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance, physical data security, environmental standards, and workplace safety protocols.
Soft Skills & Operational Competencies
- Shift Flexibility: Ability to work rotating 24/7/365 shifts.
- Documentation Focus: Maintaining strict change control records and configuration maps.
- Report Writing: Producing high-level analytical and comprehensive reports.
- Leadership: Leading teams by example to achieve operational objectives.
- Problem Solving: Applying critical thinking to rapidly mitigate infrastructure incidents under pressure.
